In 1917, a clarinet player named Louis meets his hero, jazz legend Duke Ellington, in New Orleans. Over the next decade, Louis becomes a successful musician, playing with some of the biggest names in the genre. However, his personal life is not without its challenges, including a difficult relationship with his father and the onset of World War II.
In 1940, a young girl named Sarah investigates the mystery of her father's lost love of music. She discovers that her father was a talented pianist who gave up his career to pursue a different path in life. Sarah is determined to find out why her father gave up music and to honor his memory by learning to play the piano herself.
In 1977, a band called The Blue Notes embarks on a world tour that may be their last. The band is made up of four talented musicians: Louis, who is now in his sixties; Sarah, who is now a grown woman; Joe, a young trumpet player; and Max, a talented bassist. The tour is a success, but the band members are facing personal demons that threaten to tear them apart.
As the stories unfold, we see how jazz has impacted the lives of these characters and how it has helped them to overcome their struggles and find hope and joy in their lives. We also see the connections between the different characters and how their lives are intertwined in ways that they never could have imagined.
