In recent years, the study of folk-religious literature has gained increasing attention within the field of medieval research. However, until now, there have been only a limited number of comprehensive literary-scholarly investigations into this topic. Hedwig Suwelack is one of the few scholars who has focused on this area, with her research centered around a prayer book known as the Herzmahner, which was printed in Nürnberg in 1497 by Kaspar Hochfeder.

In addition to exploring the historical and literary backgrounds of the Herzmahner, Suwelack's study also delves into the text's genesis, reception, and content analysis. A detailed examination of the text's structure, programmatic elements, and visual design is conducted, providing insights into its overall composition. Furthermore, the author develops the concept of "Gebetserzählung" to describe the specific approach taken by the Herzmahner in combining prayer and storytelling.

In constructing the narrative space and time as central elements, Suwelack identifies a literary strategy that aims to bring the narrated events closer to the reader and facilitate an individual experience of the passion. The previously unpublished text of the Herzmahner is now made accessible through a text edition.
