- More about Detecting and Modeling the Changes of Land Use and Land Cover for Land Use Planning in Da Nang City, Vietnam
Da Nang City, Vietnam, has experienced rapid industrialization and urbanization, leading to significant changes in its land use and land cover (LULC). Linh Nguyen's study used multitemporal satellite images from 1979 to 2009 to detect, quantify, and characterize these changes. The study found that 37% of the total land had undergone change, with accelerated speed in urban areas after becoming an independent municipality. Agriculture and forests had a high rate of change, with agricultural areas broken into smaller patches. Three scenarios were developed to simulate the future changes of LULC from 2009 to 2030, resulting in a continuous increase in urban area and a gradual decrease in agriculture, barren, and shrub areas. The study provides new strategies for land use planning in comparable regions facing rapid urbanization.

Da Nang City, situated in the South Central Coast region of Vietnam, has witnessed significant development over the past two decades, earning it recognition as one of Vietnam's five independent municipalities. Today, it serves as the Key Economic Zone in Central Vietnam. The city's rapid industrialization and urbanization have led to continuous changes in land use and land cover (LULC), resulting in a dynamic landscape.
In order to understand these changes, Linh Nguyen conducted a study that utilized multitemporal satellite images from 1979 to 2009. The study aimed to detect, quantify, and characterize the LULC changes in the Da Nang City region, as well as explore the impact of these changes on landscape structure through spatial landscape metrics. Additionally, the study employed simulation techniques to examine the effects of LULC changes under different scenarios.
The results of the study revealed that a significant portion of the total land area, approximately 37%, had undergone changes over the study period. Before its separation from Quang Nam Province in 1979-1996, the LULC in Da Nang City changed gradually. However, after becoming an independent municipality, the LULC experienced accelerated changes, particularly in urban areas. Within a span of 13 years (1996-2009), the urban area expanded by 86.6%.
The study suggests that this rapid urbanization is driven by a strong focus on economic development. Conversely, agriculture and forests experienced high rates of change. The dynamic change in landscape indices revealed that agricultural areas were fragmented into smaller patches. However, except for agriculture, patches of forestry and urban spaces tended to have a uniform landscape configuration.
To simulate the future changes of LULC in Da Nang City from 2009 to 2030, three scenarios with different missions were developed: Development as Usual, Aggressive Development, and Optimal Development. All scenarios resulted in a continuous increase in LULC, with the Aggressive Development scenario showing the highest growth rate.
The study's findings have important implications for urban planning and management in Da Nang City. It highlights the need for balanced development that considers both economic growth and environmental sustainability. The use of satellite imagery and simulation techniques provides valuable tools for monitoring and predicting LULC changes, enabling policymakers to make informed decisions and implement appropriate strategies to address future challenges.
In conclusion, Da Nang City's rapid development has led to significant changes in its LULC, with a significant portion of the land area undergoing transformation. The study by Nguyen provides valuable insights into these changes and their impact on landscape structure. By understanding these dynamics, policymakers can work towards a more sustainable and balanced future for the city.
