Detective Superintendent Peter Diamond has encountered a peculiar character in the city of Bath. This individual, known as Johnny Getz, operates a private investigation agency from the rooftop of Shear Amazing, a hairdressing salon. Johnny has been hired by Ruby Hubbard, whose father, an antiques shop owner, has mysteriously disappeared. Despite Diamond's reservations, Johnny insists on involving him in the investigation.

As they enter the antique shop, they discover a lifeless body, prompting the initiation of a murder investigation. Diamond is compelled to temporarily house his team in the dilapidated Corn Market building across the street. His situation worsens when his boss appoints Lady Bede, a member of the Police Ethics Committee, as an observer. Furthermore, Johnny conducts his own inquiry by becoming entangled with Ruby's stylish friend, a journalist named Olympia.

Shootings from a drive-by gunman targeting key players unleash chaos, intensifying the pressure on the team. Can they prevent further killings in this typically peaceful city? What happened to Ruby's father? And will Johnny solve the case before Diamond does?
