Sangorski & Sutcliffe, a renowned British bindery established in London in 1901, has left an indelible mark on the world of bookbinding. Renowned for their exquisite and intricate jewelled bindings, the company quickly gained recognition as one of the most important bookbinders of the 20th century. Their creations, such as the magnificent binding reproduced here, showcased their mastery of craftsmanship and attention to detail. Crafted in 1922 to house Rudyard Kiplings 1897 "Recessional" poem, written for Queen Victorias Diamond Jubilee, the original binding featured a stunning array of real turquoise, aquamarine, and ruby gemstones, accompanied by medieval-style illumination by Alberto Sangorski and gold tooling by George Sutcliffe.

In the late 1980s, Sangorski & Sutcliffe was acquired by Asprey, joining forces with Zaehnsdorf under the SSZ umbrella. However, the family name was restored in 1998 when Shepherds Bookbinders bought the company. Today, Sangorski & Sutcliffe continues to inspire and captivate stationery lovers and bibliophiles with their luxurious bookbinding legacy, ensuring that their exquisite creations are cherished by generations to come.
