The new towns of Bordeaux and Edinburgh were two of the largest urban expansions in Europe during their development, spanning the transition from Early Modern urban planning to the urban development of bourgeois society. These cities, which emerged around 77 and 83 as metropolitan residential districts, exemplified the shift from the classic ideal city to the 9th-century city of tenement blocks. Despite their historical significance, these two locations have received limited attention in the discourse surrounding historical urban development. This study aims to address this deficit by examining the two urban expansion processes from a comparative perspective, with the goal of drawing conclusions on the history of urban planning.
