  • More about Die Mysterien der Zeichen: Johannes Reuchlin, Schmuck, Schrift & Sprache

Johannes Reuchlin (1455–1522) was a Pforzheim-born jurist, Hebraist, and religious philosopher whose works marked the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era. To commemorate the 500th anniversary of his death, an exhibition and publication will bring jewelry, writings, and language into dialogue and offer new meanings to the titular mystery of signs. The human quest for understanding and tolerance is a focal point, with selected manuscripts and works by Reuchlin highlighted from new perspectives. Objects that reflect Reuchlin's cognitive world will also be on display.

Johannes Reuchlin (1455–1522) stands as one of the most significant European humanists whose works played a pivotal role in the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern era. To commemorate the 500th anniversary of his passing, an exhibition and publication are being organized, aimed at fostering a dynamic dialogue between jewelry, writings, and language. The central theme revolves around the enduring human quest for understanding and tolerance, which remains as relevant today as it ever was. Selected manuscripts and works by Reuchlin will be showcased from fresh perspectives, while an emphasis will be placed on objects that encapsulate Reuchlin's cognitive world through script and symbols from the magnificent collection of the Schmuckmuseum Pforzheim [Pforzheim Jewelry Museum].

Contributions from esteemed scholars such as Jonathan Boyd, Beatriz Chadour-Sampson, Matthias DallAsta, Cornelie Holzach, Wolfgang Mayer, Susanne Nagel, Katja Poljanac, Stefan Rhein, Nathan Ron, Isabel Schmidt-Mappes, Pierre Vesperin, and Anja Wolkenhauer enrich the content of this publication. The text is presented in German.
