Under the influence of hyper-globalization, the traditional understanding of regionalism has undergone a significant transformation. In the past, regionalism was primarily perceived as a result of economic interdependence and security connectivity, with sovereign states playing a central role in navigating the liberal world order. However, in the third millennium, hyper-globalization compels us to expand our lens of analysis to encompass two additional dimensions. Firstly, the book explores how 29 Asian sovereign states participate in multilateral treaty participation, thereby developing global quasi-legislative types. Secondly, it examines how citizens' satisfaction with the quality of life in these 29 civil societies shapes their societal types. By linking these two features, both at the state level and below and above it, the book aims to measure the characteristics of four Asian regionalisms (Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia) and assess their prospects for the future, particularly in light of Asia's status as the world's most populous continent in the twenty-first century.
To measure regionalism, the book employs a multifaceted approach. It examines the proclivity of 600 multilateral treaty participation in terms of speed (cautious versus agile), angle (global commons versus individual interests), and strategy (aspirational bonding versus mutual binding). These metrics provide insights into the varying degrees of engagement and cooperation among countries within a region. On the other hand, the quality of life is measured by citizens' satisfaction with 16 domains, aspects, and styles of individual daily life. These domains include survival (or materialism), social relations (post-materialism), and public policy preponderance. By assessing citizens' perceptions of these different aspects of life, the book sheds light on the values, priorities, and aspirations of the people within a region.
The book's innovative approach offers a fresh perspective on understanding the complex dynamics of global politics. By combining data on treaty accessions and citizen satisfaction, it provides a comprehensive analysis of the factors shaping regionalism and societal types in Asia. The findings shed light on the diverse trajectories of countries within the four regions, highlighting both common trends and unique characteristics. The book also offers valuable insights into the potential futures of these regionalisms and their relevance in the global context.
In conclusion, this book is a groundbreaking contribution to the study of regionalism and global politics. By expanding the analytical framework beyond traditional economic and security considerations, it provides a more nuanced understanding of the complex interplay between states, societies, and citizens in the age of hyper-globalization. The innovative approach and comprehensive data analysis make it an essential read for scholars, policymakers, and anyone interested in comprehending the evolving dynamics of the world.
