Diodoros of Sicily wrote an encyclopedic compendium of world history, covering the years from the end of the Peloponnesian War to the Battle of Mantineia in 362/1. This translation provides the only extant account of the career of Dionysios I of Syracuse and the Cypriot war between Persia and Evagoras of Salamis and is supported by extensive notes and an Introduction examining Diodoros' moral and educational purpose, plan of his work, sources, and qualities as a historian.

Diodoros of Sicily, a renowned historian who lived between approximately 90 and 30 BC, dedicated thirty years of his life to crafting an exhaustive and comprehensive encyclopedia of world history, spanning from its mythical origins to his era. His remarkable work stands as the sole surviving, interconnected account of Greek affairs from 480/79 to 302/1. The books translated in this volume encompass the period from the conclusion of the Peloponnesian War to the aftermath of the Battle of Mantineia in 362/1. These pivotal years witnessed the intense struggle for supremacy among the Greek states, including Sparta, Athens, and Thebes, before they were eventually overshadowed by the unexpected rise of Macedon. Moreover, Diodoros offers the sole extant account of the career of Dionysios I of Syracuse and the Cypriot war between Persia and Evagoras of Salamis.

To support the translation, extensive notes have been provided, and the Introduction delves into Diodoros' moral and educational purpose in writing, the structure of his work, his sources, and his esteemed qualities as a historian.
