In Disappearing Rooms, Michelle Castañeda examines the criminalization of race in US immigration courts and detention centers through a performance studies perspective, highlighting the absurdist dynamics of carceral space. She analyzes the scenography of specific rooms and reveals the depersonalizing violence enacted in immigration law through embodied, ritualistic, and affective components. In her groundbreaking book, Disappearing Rooms, Michelle Castañeda delves into the pervasive criminalization of race that occurs daily in US immigration courts and detention centers. Through a performance studies lens, she explores how the theatrical concept of mise-en-scène provides fresh perspectives on immigration law and the surrealistic dynamics of carceral spaces. Drawing from her own experiences as an interpreter and courtroom companion, Castañeda analyzes the scenography of specific rooms within the immigration enforcement system, including lighting, staging, framing, gesture, speech, and choreography. Her ethnographies of proceedings in a "removal" office in New York City, a detention center courtroom in Texas, and an asylum office in the Northeast shed light on the depersonalizing violence enacted in immigration law through its embodied, ritualistic, and affective aspects. Castañeda also showcases the creative practices of detained and disappeared people living under acute duress, as they imagine the abolition of detention and borders. Illustrated with original artwork by artist-journalist Molly Crabapple, Disappearing Rooms illuminates otherwise hidden spaces of law within the contemporary deportation regime, earning it the Duke University of Press Scholars of Color First Book Award.
