The world's existing building stock plays a substantial role in global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. In 2020, buildings and construction accounted for 36% of the world's final energy consumption and 37% of energy-related CO2 emissions. According to the EU, up to 75% of the EU's existing building stock has poor energy performance, with 85-95% expected to remain in use in 2050. To achieve the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, a transformation of construction processes and a thorough renovation of the existing building stock is necessary.

It is widely acknowledged that information and communication technologies (ICTs) can play a crucial role in construction, renovation, and maintenance, as well as supporting the financing of deep renovation projects. Technologies such as sensors, big data analytics, machine learning, Building Information Modeling (BIM), digital twinning, simulation, robots, cobots, and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), as well as additive manufacturing, are revolutionizing the deep renovation process, enhancing sustainability performance, and creating new services and markets.

This open access book aims to define a deep renovation digital ecosystem for the 21st century. It provides a comprehensive review of current literature, suggests avenues for future research, and offers perspectives from the business, technology, and industry domains. By exploring the role of ICTs in deep renovation, this book aims to contribute to the development of a more sustainable and efficient built environment.
