  • More about Diversity in the East-Central European Borderlan - Memories, Cityscapes, People

This edited volume explores the legacies of Nazism, Marxism-Leninism, and violent ethno-nationalism in East-Central European borderline cities through an anthropological lens. It combines fragmented material environments, cultural continuities, political ruptures, heritage industries, and collective memories to shape present-day urban settings. The book adopts a multi-level approach to analyze engagements with lost diversity, combining Memory Studies with borderlands, cosmopolitan sociality, urban mythologies, and hybridity.

This edited volume, built on up-to-date field material, offers an anthropological perspective on the palimpsest-like milieus of Wroclaw, Lviv, Chernivtsi, and Chișinău. These East-Central European borderline cities have undergone a profound exploration of the legacies of Nazism, Marxism-Leninism, and violent ethno-nationalism in recent decades. This endeavor seeks to achieve a moral reckoning and respond to the challenges posed by the (post-)transitional period. The present shapes and contents of these urban environments result from a complex interplay of fragmented material environments, cultural continuities, political ruptures, contemporary heritage industries, and collective memories of the contentious past. These urban settings evolve from perpetual tensions between choices made in the past and the weight of that past.

A distinctive aspect of this book is its multi-level analysis of engagements with the lost diversity in historical urban milieus characterized by post-war voids and ruptures. Specifically, the collected studies explore the potential of combining the theoretical frameworks of Memory Studies with broader conceptualizations of borderlands, cosmopolitan sociality, urban mythologies, and hybridity. The contributors to the volumes are Eleonora Narvselius, Bo Larsson, Natalia Otrishchenko, Anastasia Felcher, Juliet D. Golden, Hana Cervinkova, Pawel Czajkowski, Alexandr Voronovici, Barbara Pabjan, Nadiia Bureiko, Teodor Lucian Moga, and Gaelle Fisher.
