Before the term "star" was even coined, Dora Bright was a theatrical sensation. Following a successful stint at the Royal Academy of Music, rumors of her talent spread worldwide, from America to Europe and even as far as Australia. She rose to prominence as one of the finest pianists of her generation and made history by becoming the first woman to perform at a Philharmonic Society concert in 1892, where she showcased her newly composed Fantasia No. 2. Dora Bright was a woman of remarkable determination and endurance, at the forefront of the English Musical Renaissance at the turn of the twentieth century. She was also a passionate advocate of the music of her friends and colleagues. While marriage did not hinder her from pursuing her performing and composing endeavors, the untimely death of her husband temporarily withdrew her from public view as she grieved his loss. However, her love for the stage prevailed, and she reconnected with Adeline Genee, forming a close bond that would bring English ballet back to the center of London Theatre. Together, they played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Royal Academy of Dancing. This captivating book takes the reader on a journey from Dora Bright's grandfather's arrival in Sheffield in 1769 to her passing in 1951, offering a glimpse into the life of this significant but now largely forgotten musician and composer through a diverse array of archival materials.
