To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of one of the most iconic actresses and singers in the history of show business, Hermes Press is thrilled to announce the publication of DORIS DAY - IMAGES OF A HOLLYWOOD ICON. This remarkable book features a collection of rare and previously unpublished photographs from the late star's personal collection, offering a glimpse into her remarkable life and career.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on April 3, 1922, Doris Mary Anne Kappelhoff had a dream of becoming a professional dancer before a near-fatal car accident during her teen years left her bedridden with a shattered leg for over a year. While recovering and being captivated by jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald, Doris embarked on singing lessons for two years, which led to her becoming a local radio star and joining big bands. She adopted the stage name Day and landed a plum position with the Les Brown Orchestra.
While touring cross-country with Brown, Day had several hit records with the band, culminating with the end-of-World-War-II anthem "Sentimental Journey." After two failed marriages and giving birth to her son Terry, Doris relocated to Los Angeles, where she was discovered by renowned film director Michael Curtiz (Casablanca) and signed to a contract with Warner Brothers.
With her captivating voice and undeniable talent, Doris Day quickly ascended to the top of the most popular stars in Hollywood. She continued to excel in both singing and acting, delivering memorable performances in a variety of genres. From the 1948 Technicolor musical "Romance on the High Seas" to the Oscar®-nominated hit song "It's Magic," Day showcased her versatility and charm. She went on to star in iconic films such as "Calamity Jane," "Secret Love," "Storm Warning," "Love Me or Leave Me," "The Man Who Knew Too Much," and "Pillow Talk" with Rock Hudson.
Day's impact on the entertainment industry cannot be overstated. She was a true icon, beloved by audiences worldwide for her grace, beauty, and talent. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of actors and musicians, and her influence on fashion and style is still evident today.
In honor of the 100th anniversary of Doris Day's birth, Hermes Press has created a stunning book that showcases her remarkable life and career. This collection of photographs is a testament to her enduring popularity and the impact she had on the world of entertainment. DORIS DAY - IMAGES OF A HOLLYWOOD ICON is a must-have for fans of the late star and anyone who appreciates the magic of Hollywood.
