- More about Dornier: The Yugoslav Saga 1926-2007
The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes approached the Dornier factory after World War I to renew its aging air force, which consisted mostly of obsolete war relics. The Dornier factory was chosen due to its reputation for quality, and the Kingdom purchased various Dornier airplanes and floatplanes, including the Do 17K, Do 22, and Do Wal, which served with distinction for over 90 years. The retirement of the Dornier Do 28D-2 marks the closure to the magnificent Dornier Saga in the western Balkans, and Claude Dornier's brand of airplanes is still leaving a lasting mark on Yugoslav and Serbian aviation history.

After World War I, the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (KSHS - Kraljevina Srba, Hrvata i Slovenaca) faced the urgent need to renew its aging air force, which was predominantly composed of obsolete war relics. Recognizing the Dornier factory's reputation for quality, the Kingdom chose to approach Dornier instead of relying solely on its traditional ally, France. While wartime reparation payments undoubtedly played a role in this decision, it is important to note that the airplanes the Kingdom expressed interest in and eventually purchased from Dornier had no equivalents at the time.
The Dornier aircraft, including the Do 17K, Do 22, and Do Wal, served with distinction in the Naval Air Force (PV - Pomorsko Vazduhoplovstvo) from 1926 onwards. These planes endured numerous changes in politics, countries' names, borders, flags, kings, dictators, and presidents. Notably, three of these Dornier models, the Do 17K, Do 22, and Do Wal, participated in the brief 1941 April war against the German Reich. The German Reich itself deployed Do 17 bombers in its ruthless attacks against the Yugoslav capital, Belgrade.
After over 90 years of distinguished service, the retirement of the Dornier Do 28D-2 marks the end of the remarkable Dornier Saga in the western Balkans. Even 50 years after the passing of the great Claude Dornier, his brand of airplanes continues to leave a lasting mark on the world, as well as in the history of Yugoslav and Serbian aviation.
