  • More about Douglas DC-8

The Boeing 707 s family of large jet airliners has sold about double those of the Douglas DC-8, but with nearly four hundred of all Douglas DC-8 variants ordered, the DC-8 design is far from being overshadowed. The Douglas DC-8, which began life in the 1950s as the Douglas Model 1881, was available to airliners a year later than the first Boeing 707 s but was able to maintain safety and performance standards without loss of flying qualities. A total of 556 Douglas DC-8s were built, some of which are still in service and are being re-engined with the CFM56 turbofan to give efficient propulsion and higher flight performance. This book explores the history of the DC-8 and those who made it the success it still is today.

The Boeing 707's family of large jet airliners has seen remarkable sales success, outpacing its nearest rival, the Douglas DC-8. Despite nearly four hundred orders for Douglas DC-8 variants, the DC-8 design has not been overshadowed by Boeing at Renton. The Douglas DC-8, initially known as the Douglas Model 1881, emerged a year after the first Boeing 707 s, but it was seen as an advantage rather than a disadvantage. Douglas prioritized safety and performance standards while avoiding military requirements, leading to the production of 556 Douglas DC-8s. Some of these aircraft are still in service, demonstrating excellent airframe longevity, and some are undergoing re-engining with the CFM56 turbofan, enhancing their propulsion and flight performance. These re-engined aircraft will be rebranded as 70 series. This captivating book, featuring previously unpublished images, delves into the history of the DC-8 and the individuals who contributed to its enduring success.
