  • More about Down and Out in Paris and London

George Orwell's first book, Down and Out in Paris and London, is a masterpiece of prose writing that is as provocative and incisive about class inequalities, homelessness, and social prejudices today as it was when it was first published in 1933. This edition is accompanied by an introduction that examines Orwell's book for its literary, social, and political significance.

Publisher: Oxford University Press

In the late 1920s, Eric Blair, a former colonial policeman in Burma, abandoned his profession and immersed himself in the impoverished neighborhoods of Paris and London. He reinvented himself as George Orwell, a renowned prose stylist in the English language. Orwell chose to write about the lives of the impoverished, specifically the dishwashers of Paris and the tramps of London, rather than simply imagining poverty. His approach was to personally experience the hardships and struggles of the poor. The result is a book that remains as provocative and insightful about class inequalities, homelessness, and social prejudices today as it was when it was first published in 1933.

Down and Out in Paris and London, George Orwell's debut book, is considered a masterpiece of prose writing. This edition is accompanied by an introduction that explores Orwell's book for its literary, social, and political significance.
