Over the past three and a half decades, husband-and-wife collector duo Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo have assembled an unparalleled private collection of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings, showcasing a selection of works by the most influential artists of the Dutch Golden Ages. This remarkable volume presents a compilation of approximately two dozen masterworks from the van Otterloo Collection, which the couple generously donated to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 2017, ranking among the most substantial gifts in the museum's history. Among these visually captivating paintings, one stands out as a remarkable example of exceptional preservation: Rembrandt's 1632 masterpiece, Portrait of Aeltje Uylenburgh. Previously housed in a private collection, this work depicts its elderly sitter adorned in dark robes and a delicate white millstone collar. Complementing the portrait are works by other Dutch Masters, including Cuyp, Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Jan Brueghel the Elder, each showcasing a diverse range of pictorial subjects, encompassing genre scenes, seascapes, and still lifes. Accompanied by comprehensive biographical and art historical insights, this volume invites readers to immerse themselves in the intricate composition and exquisite light quality of the finest paintings of this era.
