  • More about Dynamic Geographies

Landscape designs are often static, not changing significantly for 20-50 years. As cities become the dominant living space for humans, allowing non-human forces to contribute to our designs will make for more resilient landscapes and a healthier planet. Dynamic Geographies seeks to address these perceptions with a series of projects that showcase the potential of non-human partners in landscape architecture.

Landscapes are the result of a complex interplay of forces, shaped by time and evolving constantly. However, the majority of landscape designs are static, intended to remain largely unchanged for 20 to 50 years. This approach fails to account for the dynamic nature of landscapes, which are constantly influenced by natural processes, human activities, and climate change. As cities continue to dominate our living spaces, it is essential to embrace the contributions of non-human forces in landscape architecture. By collaborating with these forces, we can create more resilient and sustainable landscapes that not only benefit humans but also promote the health of our planet.

To achieve this, we need to develop a new landscape aesthetic that recognizes the dynamic nature of landscapes and embraces the contributions of non-human partners. This will require a shift in public perception, as well as changes in maintenance practices. The book "Dynamic Geographies" seeks to address these perceptions through a series of projects that showcase the potential of dynamic landscapes.

The book is divided into three segments: Invisible geographies, Layered geographies, and Unleashing geographies. Invisible geographies explore the hidden landscapes that are often overlooked, such as the underground ecosystems and the invisible networks of infrastructure. Layered geographies explore the layered landscapes that result from human activities and natural processes, such as urbanization and ecological restoration. Unleashing geographies explore the potential of non-human forces in landscape architecture, such as wind, water, and vegetation, to create dynamic and sustainable landscapes.

By embracing the dynamic nature of landscapes and collaborating with non-human partners, we can create more resilient and sustainable landscapes that benefit both humans and the environment. This requires a shift in our mindset, as well as a willingness to explore new approaches to landscape design and management.
