Ils avaient été précédés vingt ans auparavant par le jésuite Xavier-François de Feller célèbre publiciste luxembourgeois, tenu de rejoindre la Hongrie peu avant la disparition de son Ordre.
C’est à partir des relations de voyage en forme d’ego- documents que le lecteur suit et découvre ces êtres, errant dans un Saint Empire en guerre contre les révolutionnaires français. Leurs témoignages frôlant parfois la fiction rapportent non seulement leur volonté de survivre dans des environnements inconnus, mais attestent de l’influence de l’Aufklärung en particulier chez François Xavier de Feller.
