  • More about EcoLaw: Legality, Life, and the Normativity of Nature

This book re-imagines law as ecolaw, which suggests that law is part of the material 'everything that is connected to everything else' and that there exists a natural nomos that produces its own values and norms from which human norms and laws emerge. It will appeal to legal theorists and others with interests in these areas.

The concept of ecological thinking, which asserts that everything in the Earth and potentially the universe is interconnected, has permeated contemporary theory. Embracing this insight as a foundation for understanding law requires a departure from theoretical certainties and boundaries. It entails suspending theory itself as a conceptual endeavor and practicing it as an embodied and material project. While an ecological imagining of law can be metaphorical and imaginative, this book demonstrates that it is also literal. Law is an integral part of the interconnected "everything that is connected to everything else."

Once the previous assumptions of legal thinking are dismantled, it becomes possible to view law as "natural," as deeply embedded in and emergent from a normative biophysical nature. The book proposes the existence of a natural "nomos": animals, plants, and Earth systems that generate their own values and norms, from which human norms and laws emerge.

In this book, the author proposes a new perspective on law and presents specific arguments to demonstrate the feasibility of law as ecolaw. Drawing inspiration from post-humanities, socioecological thought, and interdisciplinary developments across natural sciences and humanities, this book will appeal to legal theorists as well as those with interests in these fields.
