  • More about Efficient Integration of 5G and Beyond Heterogeneous Networks

This book discusses the smooth integration of optical and RF networks in 5G and beyond (5G+) heterogeneous networks (HetNets), covering both planning and operational aspects. It presents an algorithm to optimize joint base station densities for RF-optical HetNets, explores vertical handovers and multi-homing using a cooperative framework, and adopts a two-timescale multi-agent reinforcement learning strategy for optimal power allocation.

This book delves into the seamless integration of optical and RF networks in 5G and beyond (5G+) heterogeneous networks (HetNets), encompassing both planning and operational aspects. By incorporating high-frequency air interfaces into 5G+ wireless networks, the congested radio frequency (RF) bands can be alleviated. Visible light communication (VLC) is emerging as a promising solution for future generations of HetNets, combining the high throughput of visible light with the high reliability of RF. Heterogeneous RF-optical networks merge the strengths of both technologies, offering high data rates and reliability. However, implementing these HetNets in mobile scenarios presents several challenges from both planning and operational perspectives. Since the millimeter wave (mmWave), terahertz, and visible light bands share similar wave propagation characteristics, the concepts presented herein can be broadly applied across all these bands.

To facilitate the planning of RF-optical HetNets, the authors present an algorithm that utilizes stochastic geometry to determine the joint optimal densities of base stations, ensuring that users' quality-of-service (QoS) demands are met with minimum network power consumption. From an operational standpoint, the book explores vertical handovers and multi-homing using a cooperative framework. For vertical handovers, it employs a data-driven approach based on deep neural networks to predict abrupt optical outages, enabling the implementation of reinforcement learning strategies to minimize network latency during handovers. In terms of multi-homing support, the authors examine the aggregation of resources from both optical and RF networks, adopting a two-timescale multi-agent reinforcement learning strategy for optimal power allocation.

By presenting comprehensive planning and operational strategies, this book empowers network operators and researchers to navigate the complexities of integrating optical and RF networks in 5G and beyond, paving the way for enhanced connectivity, higher data rates, and improved network performance.
