President Xi proposed the Targeted Poverty Alleviation program in 2013, with the aim of providing resources to impoverished individuals to help them escape poverty. Over three million cadres have been dispatched to the country's least developed regions to educate, inspire, and assist the most destitute people with financial support, employment opportunities, and business ventures. The authors of this series of books visited some of the previously impoverished villages to document how advancements in education, agriculture, health, and tourism had brought about positive change. They wrote about their observations, conversations, and emotions in these areas, transforming them into touching and vivid stories. On November 3, 2013, President Xi visited Shibaidong Village in Western Hunan Province and proposed targeted poverty alleviation as a national solution to reduce poverty. The book presents eighteen representative stories of villagers in Shibaidong Village, detailing their struggles to overcome poverty and strive for a better life. Each story is told in the first person, incorporating elements of daily life.
