Otto Dix (1891-1969) was deeply concerned by the national socialist art policy, which labeled his realistic artwork as "sittlichkeitsgefährdend" and "detrimental" to the German people's will to fight. In response, Dix transitioned from being a painter to a versatile artist oscillating between conservative and critical stances, despite facing obscurity and rejection. This forced artistic transformation resulted in the creation of "hidden" and sometimes subversive, sometimes conflicting icons, which are the focus of this book.
The analysis examines the art of the painter in the context of the artistic developments in Germany from the Weimar Republic to the post-war period. All genres, including landscapes, portraits, and (Christian) figure paintings, are considered.
