After the extensive destruction caused by the French occupation in 1945, the French forces aimed to rebuild the city of Mainz into a French-influenced municipality. For this task, Marcel Lods, a proponent of functionalist architecture, was commissioned. Lods' team, which included architects from both Germany and France, incorporated ideas from the pre-1945 era into the city's architectural plans. However, their response to the local population's resistance and some French military officials' disapproval led to the commissioning of Paul Schmitthenner with a project aimed at preserving the historical character of the city. While both projects faced challenges, Mainz remained a focal point of a remarkable clash between two opposing architectural trends in Europe during the 20th century. This clash was unparalleled in its intensity and expertise, as demonstrated nowhere else in this period.

As a result of extensive research spanning several decades, this book offers a comprehensive examination of these comprehensive plans and their historical contexts for the first time.
