  • More about Emergence of a Modern Dwelling: Richard Neutra's Hassrick House

The Hassrick House, designed by Richard Neutra, is an icon of mid-century modern style in Philadelphia's East Falls neighborhood. In 2015, Thomas Jefferson University began a series of courses to study the house, involving architectural survey, drawing, photography, and documentary research. The students' findings shed light on Neutra's design process, collaboration with clients, and the role of Thaddeus Longstreth as his proxy negotiator. The house has a history of design, dwelling, neglect, restoration, and reinvention and is now used as a laboratory for learning.

Nestled within the East Falls neighborhood of Philadelphia, just beyond the northern boundary of the Thomas Jefferson University's East Falls campus, stands the iconic Hassrick House (1958-61), a testament to the celebrated architect Richard Neutra's mid-century modern style. Often hailed as an East Coast interpretation of California Modernism, this remarkable building is one of only three structures designed by Neutra within the city limits.

The journey of Thomas Jefferson University's involvement with the Hassrick House began in the summer of 2015 when Andrew Hart, an assistant professor of Architecture in the College of Architecture & the Built Environment, initiated a series of summer courses aimed at studying this architectural gem. The inaugural multidisciplinary group of students delved into architectural survey, drawing, and photography, employing the standards set by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and the Historic American Landscape Survey (HALS). Subsequent summer courses further refined the architectural drawings, adhering to these rigorous guidelines. Another cohort of students embarked on a documentary research project to uncover the rich history of the house and its occupants.

Throughout this process, the owners, George Acosta and John Hauser, played a supportive role, collaborating closely with the students. Neutra's architectural prowess and his close relationship with the Hassricks, particularly Barbara, who emerged as the primary client voice during the house's design, captivated the hearts, minds, and imaginations of everyone who engaged with this architectural masterpiece. As one student reminisced, "We have all been swept away by the stories unfolding from our research."

In 2018, Hauser and Acosta made a significant decision by selling the property to Thomas Jefferson University with the understanding that the house would continue to serve educational purposes. In George's words, "I had come to realize that the students can be the future custodians of that home. They can be the eyes."

Today, the Hassrick House stands as a living testament to the enduring legacy of Richard Neutra's architectural vision and the transformative power of education. It continues to inspire and educate future generations, fostering a deep appreciation for mid-century modern design and the rich history of Philadelphia.
