- More about English-Medium Instruction in Turkish Universities: Policies, Practices, and Perceptions
The book examines the variation with which EMI is implemented at universities in Turkey through a multilevel empirical investigation of policies, practices, and perceptions. It argues that EMI is neither English-only nor English-always in practice and highlights the need for more comprehensive policies and processes to integrate content and language learning in higher education.

The increasing prevalence of English as a global language has led to a surge in the number of English-medium instruction (EMI) programs in higher education institutions. However, the decision-making process for implementing EMI programs often lacks sufficient consideration for the complex educational issues associated with language policy changes. This book aims to shed light on the diverse implementation of EMI at universities in Turkey through a comprehensive multilevel empirical investigation. It provides a sociohistorical overview of EMI in Turkey, drawing on a dataset that encompasses policy documents, classroom observations, interviews with teachers, and focus group discussions with students.
Despite national policies that advocate for a one-language-at-a-time model of EMI education, this book argues that EMI is neither exclusively English-only nor English-always in practice. By highlighting the variation in EMI implementation across Turkish universities, this study illustrates the need for more comprehensive EMI policies and processes that foster the integration of content and language learning in higher education.
The implications of this study are discussed in the context of policy planning, program development, and pedagogical support. It will be of interest to researchers and postgraduate research students who are passionate about EMI, particularly in the Turkish context.
