En esta obra se estudia la trayectoria vital y literaria de Bartolomé Gutiérrez (1701-1758): poeta culto tardobarroco -y popular al mismo tiempo-, así como autor de una Historia de Xerez, en cuatro tomos, que no llegó a ver impresa. Se aborda la ecdótica de su paratexto y se analizan en detalle las circunstancias vitales que obstaculizaron e impidieron finalmente su publicación.
La segunda parte de la monografía ofrece importantes testimonios de la obra de Gutiérrez, en la que destaca la variedad de composiciones inéditas, así como el texto crítico íntegro del Poema histórico, las octavas proemiales de la Historia y las distintas redacciones paratextuales.
Nos encontramos, en definitiva, ante una sólida obra que desvela con rigor y amenidad los variados registros de Gutiérrez, a través de cuyas páginas desfilan importantes figuras de la centuria ilustrada como Mayans, Feijoo, Flórez o Campomanes, así como los inexcusables historiógrafos de la Antigüedad y del Siglo de Oro.
