Ernö Goldfinger (1902-1987) is renowned for his pre-war Hampstead house, meticulously preserved by the National Trust, along with his iconic high-rise housing of the late 1960s. These architectural landmarks mark the culmination of a diverse and influential career as a modernist thinker, deeply immersed in the realms of domestic spaces, cities, and the architectural discipline. Goldfinger's inspiration stemmed from his teacher Auguste Perret, and he brought the vibrant spirit of 1920s Paris to revitalize the English architectural landscape.
Goldfinger's contributions to post-war architecture were groundbreaking, offering imaginative alternatives to standard solutions for schools, housing, and offices. He excelled in the composition of clusters of free-standing buildings, seamlessly integrating them into existing streets. What sets Goldfinger apart is his unexpected collaboration with Paul and Marjorie Abbatt, founders of Britains first modernist toy business.
Based on extensive research in Goldfinger's extensive archive and intimate knowledge of his entire body of work, this book presents an accessible and richly illustrated account of a fascinating figure. Alan Powers and Elain Harwood, who collaborated with Goldfinger for over two decades on pioneering studies of twentieth-century British architecture, have contributed to long-term conservation efforts. Regrettably, it is the last in the line, as Elain passed away in 2023, having completed the final text and images for publication.
