The exhibition, a reflection of the present, delves into our ongoing conflicts, ranging from right-wing populism to identity politics. It presents an opportunity to ponder, from the vantage point of a generation, the time in which we find ourselves. Is Postmodernity truly over, or are we still in its midst?
The year 1967 marked a significant turning point in our contemporary era, as Modernism, which had envisioned a world of equal housing, furniture, and rights for all, gave way. In its wake, a peculiar and eccentric world emerged. Architects envisioned amusement parks as the new ideal cities, designers defied convention, and the clash between the two dominant political systems gave way to a pursuit of self-realization. New media interconnected the world, and images became the battleground for contests of style and recognition.
The exhibition showcases breathtaking examples of design, architecture, cinema, pop, philosophy, art, and literature, charting the emergence of the information society, the flourishing of financial markets, the era of vibrant subcultures, including disco, punk, and techno-pop, the popularity of shoulder pads, and the influence of Memphis furniture. It also documents the sudden surge in the construction of museums, which have emerged as the new temples of art and culture, with the Bundeskunsthalle itself as the grandest exhibit.
When the Bundeskunsthalle opened its doors in 1992, the Cold War had concluded, and Francis Fukuyama's renowned book, proclaiming "the end of history as such," was published. However, thirty years later, it is evident that history has not ended, and Postmodernism continues to be a subject of considerable debate.
