Urban neighborhoods are a litmus test of migration, with some areas hailed as multicultural success stories and others framed as ghettos. Exploring the Transnational Neighborhood filters these debates through the lenses of geography, anthropology, and literary and cultural studies, presenting these localities as densely packed contact zones where disparate cultures meet in often highly asymmetrical relations, producing a constantly shifting local and cultural knowledge about identity, belonging, and familiarity.

Urban neighborhoods have emerged as a focal point of public discourse, serving as a litmus test for migration. Certain areas are celebrated as exemplars of multicultural success, while others are portrayed as ghettos. In an effort to bridge this dichotomy, Exploring the Transnational Neighborhood examines these debates through the lenses of geography, anthropology, and literary and cultural studies. By introducing the interdisciplinary concept of the transnational neighborhood, the book presents these localities, such as Clichy-sous-Bois, Belfast, El Segundo Barrio, and Williamsburg, as densely packed contact zones where diverse cultures intersect in often asymmetrical relations, resulting in a dynamic and evolving local and cultural understanding of identity, belonging, and familiarity.

Exploring the Transnational Neighborhood provides a crucial response to a pressing question of our time: How do individuals forge a sense of community within a highly globalized context? By centering the neighborhood as a central space of transcultural everyday experience across three distinct discourse levels (virtual, physical local, and transnational-global), the multidisciplinary contributions explore both bottom-up practices of community building and the cultural, social, economic, and historical barriers that shape these interactions.
