- More about F3D/EF-10 Skyknight Units of the Korean and Vietnam Wars
The Douglas F3D Skyknight was an early attempt to combine new technologies in a lethal package capable of shipboard operation. It relied on three radars, four 20mm cannons, and darkness to detect, track, and target MiGs. After the war, 35 Skyknights were converted into electronic warfare aircraft, but the proliferation of radar-guided guns and missiles eroded their advantage. This book explores their key roles as escort aircraft and electronic warfare aircraft.

The Douglas F3D Skyknight was a groundbreaking endeavor that sought to seamlessly integrate cutting-edge technologies into a formidable combat system capable of operation on ships. While most fighters prioritized speed and agility, the F3D stood out with its unique design, featuring a portly, straight-winged configuration and a reliance on three radars, four 20mm cannons, and, most importantly, the cover of darkness. The Skyknight made its inaugural flight in March 1948, and it would later taste combat during the Korean War in September 1952. Marine Night Fighter Squadron 513 [VMF(N)-513], deployed to Korea, was tasked with the critical mission of escorting USAF B-29 bombers over northern Korea. Unlike their Chinese and North Korean counterparts, who relied on ground-controlled intercept radar for steering guidance into firing positions, the F3D possessed its own onboard radars, granting it unparalleled autonomy and lethality. Skyknight crews demonstrated their prowess by securing six nocturnal kills in exchange for just one combat loss during the Korean War.
Following the war, 35 Skyknights underwent conversion into electronic warfare (EW) aircraft, as the United States increased its air operations over North Vietnam in early 1965. The need for a tactical EW jet to provide electronic countermeasures (ECM) protection to strike packages heading north became increasingly apparent. While the F3D initially enjoyed significant success over North Vietnam, the proliferation of radar-guided guns and missiles began to erode the advantage provided by EF-10 escort support, which completed its last combat mission in October 1969.
This extensively illustrated volume delves into the history and deployment of the F3D Skyknight during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. It features firsthand accounts from aircrew, original photographs, and 30 profile artworks that showcase the Skyknight's pivotal roles as an escort aircraft and electronic warfare platform. Through these captivating visuals, readers gain a deeper understanding of the Skyknight's significance in the air warfare landscape and its impact on the outcomes of these conflicts.
