  • More about Far-Right Ecologism: Environmental Politics and the Far Right in Hungary and Poland

The far-right has provided a substantive ideological engagement with the natural environment, building on the nationalist bent of early green thought and the perceived nexus of pristine nature and cultural purity. This book explores the ideology, ecological discourse, and policy proposals behind the increasing impact of far-right actors on environmental politics in Hungary and Poland.

Format: Hardback
Length: 14 pages
Publication date: 01 August 2023
Publisher: Taylor & Francis Ltd

The far-right has been increasingly engaging with various issues, including the environment, due to its mainstreaming. While it may present itself as a vote-winning strategy, the far right has a substantive ideological engagement with the natural world. Building on the nationalist roots of early green thought and the perceived connection between pristine nature and cultural purity, Far-Right Ecologism has adopted green elements from other ideologies, such as conservatism, fascism, nationalism, and populism. This book explores the ideology, ecological discourse, and policy proposals behind the growing influence of far-right actors in environmental politics in Hungary and Poland. Each chapter begins with stories from interviewees to illustrate how the far right in these countries attempts to penetrate environmental politics and forge partnerships with green actors through specific, local-based policy contributions. Drawing on a range of sources, including electoral programs, ideological texts, manifestos, social media, public speeches, policy proposals, and more than 40 in-depth interviews with far-right representatives, this book also assesses epistemological and methodological challenges in examining the environmental dimension of far-right, post-socialist politics. This book is valuable reading for researchers interested in the far right, environmental politics, and Central Eastern Europe.
