Goethe, the renowned German author, holds a prominent position in the realm of literature, and his poetic drama Faust, Part I (1808) stands as one of his most celebrated masterpieces, rivaling the esteemed works of European literature such as Dante's Inferno and Shakespeare's Hamlet. This remarkable translation marks the first new rendition into English since David Constantine's version in 2005. However, the question arises: why introduce another translation when numerous existing versions are already in circulation? To bolster his argument in favor of Shakespeare as his favorite author, Goethe asserts that much has already been said about the poet-dramatist, leading one to believe that there is nothing further to be expressed. Nevertheless, he adds a peculiar observation: "Yet, it is the peculiar attribute of the spirit that it constantly motivates the spirit." Goethe's profound dramatic poem continues to resonate with us in ever-changing ways, as our world evolves alongside us. Consequently, the need for a new or updated translation arises to unveil the boundless, enigmatic, and enchanting poetic and cultural power of Faust. In this regard, Eugene Stelzig's translation emerges as a noteworthy contribution. It presents the text of the play in clear and concise English, tailored to serve as a valuable resource for contemporary undergraduate audiences. At the same time, Stelzig ensures that the essence of the play's poetic features, including the use of rhyme, is preserved and intact. Published by Bucknell University Press, this translation has been widely distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.
