Felix Vallotton, a prominent member of Les Nabis and a contemporary of Bonnard and Vuillard, is the subject of a significant study published to accompany exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, from 30 June to 29 September 2019, and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, from 29 October 2019 to 26 January 2020. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, Vallotton spent much of his working life in France, closely associated with Pierre Bonnard and Edouard Vuillard, and a fellow member of the avant-garde group Les Nabis. Despite his association with these renowned artists, Vallotton has sometimes been overshadowed by his more famous contemporaries. While he produced some of his most important work in Paris in the 1890s, his original and innovative approach persisted throughout his career.

This book, accompanied by a new presentation of Vallotton's oeuvre, aims to re-evaluate his output and legacy. It includes works never seen in public before and features texts by leading authorities that explore Vallotton's life, work, and reception. The book is generously illustrated throughout with the finest exemplars of the artist's paintings and prints, providing a comprehensive view of his artistic journey.

The exhibition is organized by the Royal Academy of Arts, London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in collaboration with Fondation Felix Vallotton, Lausanne. It offers a unique opportunity to appreciate Vallotton's contributions to the art world and his place in the history of modern painting.
