The inspiring tale of two Gordon Highlanders Territorial Army battalions is recounted here, which took part in some of the Second World Wars most fierce battles.
Following their evacuation from Dunkirk, the 6th Gordons engaged in combat in Tunisia in 1943, ultimately resulting in the German surrender in North Africa. After a period of service in Iraq, the 1st London Scottish participated in the Battle of Monte Cassino, where Private George Mitchell earned the prestigious Victoria Cross, one of several gallantry awards bestowed upon the men of both battalions.
In January 1944, the 6th Gordons became the first British battalion to land at Anzio. While the landing itself was unopposed, the Germans launched devastating counter-attacks, resulting in nearly 400 casualties. Despite this, the Battalion displayed remarkable heroism, holding on to their positions.
The 1st London Scottish arrived to join their Regimental 'brethren, facing equally heavy devastating losses. Following the breakout, the Gordons pipe band led the liberation parade in Rome. Both battalions continued their march through Italy, ultimately breaking through the Gothic Line and achieving victory.
The bravery and resilience of these two battalions serve as a testament to the valor and sacrifice of the soldiers who served during World War II. Their contributions to the war effort have left an indelible mark on history, and their stories will continue to inspire generations to come.
