The study of ceramics from the Virú-Gallinazo and Mochica populations in Peru reveals that these societies were rival and contemporary, but little is known about their relationship. This research documents the pottery traditions of these populations to understand their origins, filiations, and contacts. It demonstrates that they had their own technical traditions and maintained frequent contacts by exchanging ceramics or moving from one region to another to produce them. This suggests that a more holistic approach to ceramic material is necessary to restore the link between ceramics, their producers, and the societies to which they belong.

During the pre-Hispanic period, the northern coast of Peru witnessed the emergence of numerous societies, including the Virú-Gallinazo and Mochica populations, who coexisted during the first millennium of our era. In this region, the morpho-stylistic analysis of ceramics played a crucial role in establishing the chronological sequence commonly accepted, which distinguishes the Virú-Gallinazo and Mochica populations as rival and contemporary societies. However, limited knowledge exists regarding their relationship. The research presented herein aims to shed light on the Virú-Gallinazo and Mochica pottery traditions by examining their origins, affiliations, and contacts. This study involved a comprehensive examination of the manufacturing modes of archaeological ceramics discovered at over nine sites in the region, preserved at the Ministry of Culture of Peru and various Peruvian, French, and American museums. Adhering to the principles of ceramic technology, an innovative methodology was employed for the Central Andes region, focusing on the traces of manufacture visible on the potteries to delineate the distinct stages of the operative chain. The findings of this research indicate that these populations possessed their own technical traditions, rendering their potters disconnected from the same learning networks. Nevertheless, our analysis demonstrates that these populations maintained frequent interactions through the exchange of ceramics or by relocating to different regions to produce them. These results underscore the significance of shifting the focus on ceramic material from a traditional stylistic perspective to consider it from the standpoint of their production, thereby reestablishing the connection between ceramics, their producers, and the societies to which they belong.
