Nigel Watt's life is a captivating journey that spans across the African continent, encompassing his experiences in Zambia before and after independence, as well as his role as the Director of the Africa Centre in London. His involvement in the international voluntary service movement adds an intriguing dimension to his story.

Watt's early years were spent in Kenya, where he developed a deep fascination for railways and trains. His passion for these modes of transportation would shape his future adventures. After completing his education in England, Watt embarked on a series of travels throughout Africa and India. His travels took him to remote corners of the continent, where he witnessed the struggles and resilience of the African people.

In 1961, Watt found himself in Northern Rhodesia, a region that was undergoing significant political changes. Despite his opposition to colonialism, Watt decided to stay on in the region and establish a school. This decision marked a significant turning point in his life, as he became deeply involved in the education and development of the local community.

Watt's dedication to education and his commitment to the advancement of Africans earned him the label of a communist by white people in Rhodesia. However, he remained unwavering in his beliefs and continued to work tirelessly for the betterment of the African people.

After independence, Zambia experienced a period of great change and development. Watt's school became a hub of learning and innovation, providing opportunities for young Zambians to pursue their dreams and contribute to the nation's growth. He also played a key role in the development of the workcamp movement, which brought volunteers from around the world to work alongside local communities in various development projects.

Watt's work for International Voluntary Service (GB) and later for CCIVS took him to southern Africa, where he worked closely with communities affected by poverty, disease, and conflict. His efforts in reconciliation and peacebuilding earned him an MBE, a testament to his dedication and impact.

In addition to his work in Zambia and Africa, Watt's life is filled with personal anecdotes and stories that add depth and humor to his narrative. From his encounters with exotic animals to his experiences in the diplomatic corps, Watt's life is a testament to the versatility and resilience of the human spirit.

This book, "A Life Story," offers a unique perspective on the history of Zambia and Africa over the past sixty years. It provides valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by the African continent, and sheds light on the remarkable contributions of individuals like Nigel Watt. Watt's life story is a testament to the power of education, compassion, and determination in shaping a better future for all.
