Glass-making in the Ancient Near East delves into the composition and production of glass from the mid-second to mid-first millennium BC, encompassing the initial thousand years of glass-making. Comprehensive multi-element analyses of 132 glasses sourced from Pella in Jordan, Nuzi and Nimrud in Iraq (ancient Mesopotamia), yield valuable insights into the earliest stages of glass production. A novel approach to data interpretation and presentation has been developed, allowing for the characterization of glass types and the exploration of various compositional aspects, including raw materials, regional variations, and historical changes. This study compares the compositional data from the ancient Near East with glass compositional data from diverse regions such as the Levant, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Iran, and France. By contextualizing these findings within the archaeological context, it becomes evident that they shed light on glass production techniques, raw material sources, and the distribution of finished and raw glasses. Furthermore, this research delves into technological innovations, such as the introduction of natron-fluxed glasses, early decoloring techniques using antimony, and the utilization of Egyptian cobalt colorants in Near Eastern glass production. These developments played a crucial role in laying the foundations for the subsequent establishment of large-scale glass production during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
