Noël Drury, a middle-class Dublin Protestant, served as an officer in the 6th Royal Dublin Fusiliers during the First World War. He was part of the 10th (Irish) Division, which was the first wartime volunteer formation from Ireland to be deployed overseas. The division arrived at Gallipoli in August 1915 as part of the Suvla Bay landings.

Drury and his battalion underwent several significant phases of the Gallipoli campaign before being redeployed to Salonika in October 1915. During this time, Drury was away from his battalion for a year due to malaria but rejoined in Palestine towards the end of 1917. In the summer of 1918, his battalion was sent to the Western Front to participate in the Hundred Days Offensive.

Drury's diaries provide a detailed account of his experiences during training, daily life, the contrasting theatres of war, and the challenges of being an Irish officer in the British army. They offer a unique perspective on the war and its impact on individuals and communities.

Noël Drury's diaries are a valuable resource for historians, military enthusiasts, and anyone interested in understanding the experiences of soldiers during the First World War. They provide a glimpse into the lives of ordinary men who served in extraordinary circumstances and offer a reminder of the sacrifices made during this period.
