Architects strive to create eternal works of architecture, but buildings may change over time due to external influences. Atelier Kaiser Shen developed theses on how buildings change in their lifespan and tested them on their projects. They argue that good structure means developing a future-proof spatial idea that can survive future renovations and be viable. Stuttgart-based Atelier Kaiser Shen was founded in 2017 and works on projects of various scales, winning awards and teaching at the University of Stuttgart.

Architects often strive to create finished buildings, which are coherent works of architecture meant to last forever. However, is this claim truly valid? Should it even be a claim? After all, it is possible that a building may change after its completion. Drawing inspiration from various fields such as architectural history, art, and anthropology, the young Kaiser Shen studio developed various theses at the beginning of its practice and tested them through its own projects. At the core of this exploration is the question of how buildings undergo changes throughout their lifespan due to external influences and what these changes mean for the permanence of architecture and the concept of space. In the past, it was common practice to build on existing structures. As a result, many buildings that have survived for centuries have accumulated numerous layers of time. This is particularly evident in the additions and conversions of cathedrals, where multiple architectural styles overlap. In response to new framework conditions and usage requirements, buildings were continually developed further in the prevailing architectural style. Often, only experts can distinguish between different periods of construction. Only a few buildings are deemed so outstanding by society that they are conserved and preserved in a fixed time layer. However, such conservation is rather unnatural and can only be justified in exceptional cases.
In this book, we aim to highlight promising strategies for building and adapting unfinished houses with rooms lacking special qualities to the current framework conditions. For Atelier Kaiser Shen, a good structure goes beyond just the supporting structure. It involves developing a future-proof spatial idea that cannot be reduced to mere functionality. When building further, it is essential to create spaces that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and sustainable.
One approach is to focus on the integration of technology and sustainability into the design. By incorporating renewable energy sources, smart systems, and eco-friendly materials, architects can create buildings that are not only energy-efficient but also have a minimal environmental impact. This not only benefits the occupants but also contributes to the long-term sustainability of the built environment.
Another strategy is to embrace the concept of adaptability and flexibility. By designing buildings that can be easily modified or adapted to changing needs, architects can create spaces that are more resilient and adaptable to the changing demands of society. This can include features such as flexible spaces, modular systems, and adaptable design principles that allow for future changes and expansions.
Furthermore, architects can also explore the idea of heritage preservation and revitalization. By preserving and revitalizing historic buildings and spaces, architects can create a sense of continuity and connection to the past while also contributing to the cultural and economic development of the community. This can involve the restoration of historic features, the integration of modern technologies, and the promotion of cultural events and activities.
In conclusion, while architects often strive to create finished buildings that are meant to last forever, it is important to recognize that buildings are dynamic entities that undergo changes throughout their lifespan. By adopting promising strategies such as technology integration, adaptability, flexibility, heritage preservation, and revitalization, architects can create spaces that are not only functional but also sustainable, aesthetically pleasing, and culturally significant. By doing so, they can contribute to the long-term well-being and sustainability of the built environment.
