  • More about Follow the Fossils: Developing Metrics for Instagram as a Natural Science Communication Tool

The Internet, particularly social media platforms, has facilitated science communication, learning, and engagement. This Element explores the potential of Instagram as a science education platform by analyzing posts and stories from a paleontology-focused account. It finds that team activity updates and posts outside of predefined categories perform better, and stories with fewer slides and poll tools generate more interaction. This research provides a foundation for evaluating the effectiveness of Instagram content in science communication and natural science institutions.

The internet, particularly social media platforms, has revolutionized the way people connect, learn, and communicate about science. Two well-studied platforms are Facebook and Twitter, while Instagram, despite its potential, remains relatively understudied. This Element aims to shed light on the use of Instagram as a science education platform by pioneering a set of calculated metrics.

Using a paleontology-focused account as a case study, the authors conducted year-long analyses of 455 posts and 139 stories generated as part of an informal science learning project. The findings revealed that team activity updates and posts outside of their predefined categories performed better than their categories.

For Instagram stories, the data showed that fewer slides per story held viewers' attention longer, and stories using the poll tool garnered the most interaction. This Element serves as a foundation for assessing the success of Instagram content for science communicators and natural science institutions.

In conclusion, the internet has transformed the way science is communicated, and Instagram offers a unique platform for educators and institutions to engage with a broader audience. By leveraging the power of social media and adopting innovative strategies, Instagram can be an effective tool for promoting scientific literacy and inspiring curiosity among the next generation of scientists.
