As a Christian missionary, Shah was driven by a desire to investigate the claims made in the book, "The Unknown Life of Jesus Christ" by Nikolai Notovich, a Crimean journalist, spy, and traveler. Notovich's book suggested the existence of a lost Gospel on Jesus' life in India and Tibet.
