In 1961, General de Gaulle reclaimed his position as the leader of France amidst the escalating war in Algeria. Kim Cho, an investigative reporter for the Paris Tribune, navigated the emotional turmoil of the French nation as the impending independence of Algeria loomed. The authorities sought to conceal the truth behind the tragic crash of an express train from Strasburg to Paris. Kim's relentless pursuit of the truth brought her face-to-face with powerful forces determined to maintain control over Algeria, despite being physically separated by the Mediterranean.

Henri de Rochefort, a career officer in the French Foreign Legion, found himself caught in a moral dilemma. Should he embrace an army mutiny as the price of saving Arab forces he had trained to serve France from retribution? The planned military takeover of Algeria marked a critical juncture for Henri and the Harki families he was committed to rescuing.

Justine Müller, a left-wing deputy in the National Assembly, was recruited by the Gaullist government to bridge the gap between the ordinary people of Paris and the ruthless forces of security. However, Justine harbored a secret that she intended to use against the most powerful and ruthless police chief in France.

Leo Beckendorf, an ex-German paratrooper, found himself entangled in a plot that could result in the death penalty. As General de Gaulle once again assumed the leadership of France, he grappled with closing the fault line that the threatened loss of Algeria was creating within his nation. Kim, Henri, Justine, and Leo were forced to confront their consciences as events unfolded, fracturing French society and posing threats of assassination and civil war.
