  • More about Frederic Chaubin. CCCP. Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed. 40th Ed.

Frédéric Chaubin's Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed was elected the architectural book of the year by the International Artbook and Film Festival in Perpignan, France. The book explores 90 buildings in 14 former Soviet Republics, representing the fourth age of Soviet architecture from 1970 to 1990. These buildings represent a chaotic impulse brought about by a decaying system, with no "school" or main trend emerging. They include a summer camp inspired by sketches of a prototype lunar base, a crematorium adorned with concrete flames, a technological institute with a flying saucer crashed on the roof, and a political center watching you like Big Brother.

Frédéric Chaubin's Cosmic Communist Constructions Photographed, an architectural book of the year at the International Artbook and Film Festival in Perpignan, France, explores 90 buildings in 14 former Soviet Republics. Chaubin considers this period the fourth age of Soviet architecture, an unknown and flourishing era from 1970 to 1990. Contrary to the 1920s and 1950s, no distinct "school" or main trend emerges in these buildings. Instead, they represent a chaotic impulse brought about by a decaying system. Architects took advantage of the collapsing monolithic structure, pushing beyond modernism and returning to roots or freely innovating. Some completed projects that Constructivists would have envisioned, while others expressed their imagination in expressionist ways. Examples include a summer camp inspired by sketches of a prototype lunar base, a crematorium adorned with concrete flames, a technological institute with a flying saucer crashed on the roof, and a political center reminiscent of Big Brother. These buildings, with their diverse styles, outlandish strategies, and local exoticism, are extraordinary remnants of a collapsing system. They testify to the vast geography of the USSR and its impending end, as well as the holes in a widening net. At the same time, they immortalize many of the ideological dreams of the country and its time, ranging from a fascination with the cosmos to the rebirth of identity.
