During the 19th century, Muslim countries of Africa and Asia were forced to modernize their armies to face the new menaces from Europe. The Ottoman Army was reformed following the Napoleonic Wars and played an important role in several pivotal conflicts. Other Muslim nations, such as Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Persia, and Afghanistan, also reformed their military forces along "westernized" lines. The main aim of the book is to provide a detailed analysis of the history, organization, and uniforms of these armies.

During the 19th century, Muslim countries in Africa and Asia faced increasing military pressure from European colonial powers, leading to the modernization of their armies to confront new threats from abroad. By the outbreak of World War I in 1914, several "westernized" Muslim armies had already emerged, with the Ottoman Army being one of the most significant. The Turkish troops played a crucial role in several pivotal conflicts of the 19th century, including the Crimean War, and developed their own distinctive identity over the decades. Following the Ottomans' example, several other Muslim nations reformed their military forces along "westernized" lines, including Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Persia, and Afghanistan. The Egyptian Army became a major military power in the Mediterranean area, while the reformed troops of Tunisia and Morocco were tasked with countering French expansionism in the Maghreb. Persia developed a strong army with western uniforms and weapons, which confronted the British, while Afghanistan played a prominent role in the "Great Game" between Russia and Great Britain. The present book aims to provide a detailed analysis of the history, organization, and uniforms of the Muslim armies that emerged during the 19th century, using dozens of color uniform plates depicting the dress of the various corps.
