Between the Revolution of 1848 and the conclusion of World War II, France experienced significant social, intellectual, and political transformations. The art world, particularly in Paris, underwent remarkable transformations as artists experimented with bold, expressive styles. During this period, various art movements emerged and thrived, including realism, impressionism, post-impressionism, symbolism, fauvism, cubism, surrealism, and more. These movements had profound impacts on the Western artistic canon and shaped the artistic landscape of the time.

This magnificent volume, featuring 59 exceptional works from the Brooklyn Museum's renowned European collection, pays tribute to France as the epicenter of international modernism from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. Ranging in scale, subject matter, and style, these paintings and sculptures were created by the era's leading artists, both French-born and those who studied and worked in France. The 47 artists represented in this book include renowned names such as Bonnard, Caillebotte, Cezanne, Chagall, Degas, Matisse, Monet, Redon, Renoir, and Rodin.

The works in this book are organized into four sections, each showcasing the successive avant-garde movements that defined modern art in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The chapters on landscape, still life, portraits and figures, and the nude invite readers to explore comparisons and contrasts across time and mediums.

Accompanying a major traveling exhibition, this book will be on display at various venues and dates. The exhibition will commence at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas, from February 22 to May 21, 2017. It will then travel to the TK in June, where it will be on display from June 16 to October 8, 2017. The exhibition will continue its journey to the Baker Museum in Naples, Florida, from November 3, 2017, to January 28, 2018. It will then move to the TK in February, where it will be showcased from February 23 to May 20, 2018. The exhibition will conclude its tour at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in Manitoba, Canada, from June 15 to September 9, 2018. Finally, it will be presented at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa, from October 5, 2018, to January 6, 2019.

This captivating volume offers a glimpse into the rich artistic heritage of France and its profound influence on the world of art. It serves as a testament to the creativity and innovation of the artists who graced the French capital during this transformative period and showcases their contributions to the development of modern art.
