From Addis to the Aosta Valley is the captivating account of Keith Ford's service in the Second World War, spanning from 1940 to 1945. As a gunner, he was deployed to the northern region of East Africa, where he witnessed his first taste of action alongside the 1st South African Division during the invasion of Italian Somaliland. His military journey continued with involvement in the Abyssinian campaign and the joyous liberation of Addis Ababa. Subsequently, he faced the challenging terrain of North Africa, enduring the dark days of the Desert campaign as a Gun Position Officer's Assistant on 25-pounders with the 1st South African Brigade. His experiences ranged from the defensive box south of Sidi Rezegh to the strategic locations of Bir el Gubi, Bardia, Tobruk, and Gazala. Tragically, his battery was annihilated by German panzers at Agheila.
After retraining as a Bofors anti-aircraft gunner, Ford served with the Eighth Army at El Alamein. Upon posting to Italy, his Light Anti-Aircraft Unit 1 transformed into D Company Witwatersrand De la Rey Battalion and took up positions along the 1944 Winter Line. Throughout his service, he witnessed intense action, including the assault and capture of Caprara, the advance towards the river Po, and the final conquest of St Bernard's Pass in the Aosta Valley.
What sets Ford's story apart is his keen eye for detail, not only in the countryside but also in the people and cultures he encounters. His writing imbues a sense of immediacy and pathos, drawing the reader into the experiences of an ordinary soldier who possesses a remarkable ability to observe and empathize with the surrounding environment and its inhabitants.
Ford's relationships with his comrades and the civilians he meets, particularly the Italian women, hold a special place in his heart. His interactions with these individuals add depth and authenticity to his narrative, showcasing the human side of warfare and the complexities of intercultural interactions.
From Addis to the Aosta Valley is a testament to the resilience and bravery of ordinary soldiers who faced immense challenges and hardships during World War II. Keith Ford's story captures the essence of a soldier's journey, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who served and sacrificed for their countries. Through his vivid storytelling and profound observations, Ford invites readers to reflect on the complexities of war, the importance of camaraderie, and the enduring impact of historical events.
