  • More about From Jet Provost to Strikemaster: A Definitive History of the Basic and Counter-Insurgent Aircraft at Home and Overseas

The book covers the history of the Hunting/BAC Jet Provost and Strikemaster, which were used by the RAF for 38 years to train pilots and pioneered the all-through flying training program. It was designed and built in 1951 by Percival Aircraft in Luton and was the primary jet-powered training aircraft for the RAF until 1993. The BAC 167 Strikemaster was developed in the 1960s and was adopted by thirteen air forces. David Watkins has produced an extensive look at these aircraft, including rare photography, after years of research.

The BAC 167 Strikemaster, a light-attack aircraft developed in the 1960s for counter-insurgency operations, was primarily used by foreign air forces. Thirteen air forces adopted it, and it has seen action in a variety of conflicts, including the Dhofar War and counter-insurgency operations against well-armed communist-back guerrillas. Despite the production of 723 Jet Provost and Strikemaster airframes between 1954 and 1983, these aircraft have been overlooked in comparison to other jet types of the same era.

David Watkins, after years of meticulous research aided by veterans and historians, has produced an extensive examination of these aircraft. He has accessed the archives of the Warton Collection and amassed a collection of rare photography to accompany the extraordinary history of these jets.

From Jet Provost to Strikemaster is a work of narrative and technical detail that will satisfy the most ardent aviation enthusiasts.
