Margaret (Peggy) Wilson, born in England in 1897, was the epitome of the modern woman, serving as a medical volunteer during World War I and later attending medical school to become a doctor of tropical diseases. In 1926, Peggy embarked on a journey to Kathmandu, and four years later, she tied the knot with her friend from medical school, who was working with the British Colonial Medical Service in Tanganyika (present-day Tanzania). Peggy and Donald spent the next three decades working tirelessly alongside each other, conducting groundbreaking research on malaria and public health, earning numerous accolades in the process. Peggy's daughter, Sylvie, born in 1935, reminisces about her experiences during World War II in Tanganyika and Kenya, attending boarding school, and pursuing her education at Cambridge University. After completing her studies, Sylvie returned home to teach and married a Greek Tanganyikan farmer. While they welcomed the independence and establishment of the nation of Tanzania, they also faced the challenges that came with being expats. However, Sylvie and her husband remained steadfast on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, actively participating in the construction of a new Tanzania.

This captivating mother-daughter memoir, drawn from Peggy's unpublished memoir and the meticulously collected letters, diaries, and photographs by Sylvie, spans three continents and a century of travel, love, resilience, wars, medical research, and revolutions.
